Messier 106

Messier 106, also known as NGC 4258, is a prominent spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici. It was discovered by French astronomer Pierre Méchain in 1781 and later included in Charles Messier's catalog of celestial objects. M106 is renowned for its distinctive structure, active nucleus, and unusual features. M106 is classified as a Seyfert II spiral galaxy, characterized by its well-defined spiral arms and bright central bulge. The galaxy spans about 135,000 light-years in diameter, making it larger than the Milky Way. M106 is located approximately 22 to 25 million light-years away from Earth. It has an apparent magnitude of about 9.1, making it visible with small telescopes and a popular target for amateur astronomers.
