The Heart of the Soul

This cosmic close-up delves deep into the Soul Nebula, showcasing dark and brooding dust clouds outlined by bright ridges of glowing gas, cataloged as IC 1871. Spanning about 25 light-years, this telescopic view captures only a small portion of the much larger Heart and Soul Nebulae. Located approximately 6,500 light-years away, this star-forming complex resides within the Perseus spiral arm of the Milky Way, visible from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. IC 1871 exemplifies triggered star formation, with its dense, star-forming clouds sculpted by the intense winds and radiation from the region's massive young stars.
